So last week I used the term “deep seeded” in my post about the first lady writing a children’s book.
Well bad Dave, no cookie, the term is actually “deep seated”
According to some of the sites that I’ve read the incorrect term started getting usage because of American pronunciation trends and that currently 4% of the people out there today think that “deep seeded” is the correct term.
Now my hearing sucks, my wife will be the first one to tell you this. As a matter of fact I bet she’s told me this but I just didn’t hear her. Ok, who am I kidding … I wasn’t listening.
But anyway, I think the reason I always used “deep seeded” is because it always made so much more sense to me. When farming, seeds are sown at a certain level because if you plant them too deeply, they don’t get enough warmth from the sun and will not sprout. So to me a “deep seeded” need would be a desperate need for something that was never going to be met.
I’ve only used the term myself when talking about unfulfilled needs too. Never in something like a “deep seeded” hatred for someone, because I never thought the term applied correctly.

If we’re going to talk about spelling, decrepitness is spelled with a t. But, it sounds like decrepidness. If recent trends are any indication, though, none of this will matter in 100 years ’cause (a) we’ll all be dead and (b) all reading and writing will be done in IM format:.
@Char
You know I am a lousy speller and my spell check did not flag that one strangely enough.
What apocalyptic shit have you been reading that has you on th 100 years all dead slant?
seeded makes more sense to me too since it seems to go with the idea of a thought taking root. but like i’ve said before, my hearing also sucks lemons and even with the one hearing aid i have it can be hard to understand speech. in part because of my poor listening skills. if a familiar phrase is started i tend to not hear the last part of something and concentrate instead either on what i’m gonna say next or on what the speaker is saying next.
what i’ve gotten so far from the admittedly non-scientific ‘research’ i’ve done indicates a regional trend. most of the born yankees i’ve spoken to use seated while most of the southern transplants use seeded.
WTF? I tried to link to you from Killer rants and your link was GONE. Or maybe I just over looked it. I blame Killer. I can see him now, laughing, because he knows I’m too stupid to find you any other way than a direct link, highlighted and with special fonts. Well, he’s WRONG. You have Heather to thank for this most recent visit. I stopped by her place and BAM! I’m here!
Damn you, Killer!
Dude… it’s totally still there. I feel like such an ass.
@Heather
I bow to the dictionary on this one. I’ll be saying/writing seated from now on.
@Liz
You know it was Killer in Thailand drunk of his ass just fucking with you right? He slurring to Chad right now saying… watch this I just pull this link and it totally fucks her head up cause I put it back 2 minutes later .. and she’s like WTF. hahahaha hey man watch out you spilled beer on my balls. ooo wait she likes beer do it again.
lmao at your description of killer and shad in thailand, yap, unfortunately i can see this happening. thanks so much for the mental image.
oh and liz, so glad i could help.
@Heather
I’m thinking of stalking Killer I think we’d get along famously. I’ve promised to stalk Mr. Fab first though.
It’s not your fault for mishearing it all this time–I did too–because Americans use something called an aveolar flap when pronouncing a ‘t’ between two vowel sounds. In words like ‘butter’ and ‘water’ you will notice that where the ‘t’ is, your tongue goes to a place that is different from where it goes for both ‘t’ AND ‘d’ (though it sounds very similar to a ‘d’) and is in fact more similar to a trilling ‘r’ in Spanish.
“So to me a “deep seeded” need would be a desperate need for something that was never going to be met.”
Yeah? Well, to me Flurbug is the next color after red on the electromagnetic spectrum.
It’s fun to make up words!
@Hoops
I was just admiring a Flurbug colored car the other day… it was hot.
Thanks for the laugh.
I just had to google deep seeded vs deep seated because I didn’t know which was correct. I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks deep seeded means more sense.
Okay, so, I add to the list of people who googled “deep-seeded” and how to spell it, for my own blog entry I am posting today. I am so glad someone else sees the sense in “deep-seeded” vs. “deep seated.” Your post here just reflects what I have thought along. Deep seated? What a silly term. Seed. Now there’s something more to chew on. Thanks for this!
